It is thought that Alfred W. Armstrong (son of John and Nancy Weir Armstrong) briefly lived in Montgomery County and praticed medicine in Union Township.  He was born about 1807 (Jan 22, 1807 in Knoxville, Tennessee) according to the 1850 census (and tombstone in Center Grove Cemetery, Kirkwood, Warren County, Illinois).  His second and long-time wife, Mary Elizabeth Westfall and the good Doctor were married in Boone County, Indiana on the 29th of September in 1847.  In the 1850 census, Montgomery County, they had two children, Margaret born in Tennessee (so Dr. Alfred had to have been first married in Tennessee to father Margaret) and William D (William Davis born 10 Sept 1848) age two.  They had two other children, both born in Montgomery County before they removed to Illinois (Sarah Louise born 31 Oct 1851 and Mattie born oct 1855).

Alfred Armstrong was a partner with James Smart. Smartsburg - named for this beloved doctor.
